"Robert Redford has fashioned a master piece." - Jim Svejda - CBS RADIO

Academy Award winner Robert Redford ( Best Director, Ordinary People,1980) captures the majesty of the Montana wilderness and the strength of the American family in this acclaimed adaptation of Norman Maclean's classic memoir.

Craig Sheffer stars as the young Norman, and Brad Pitt stars as his brother Paul, an irresistible daredevil driven to challenge the world. Growing up, both boys rebel against their stern minister father. While Norman channels his rebellion into writing, Paul descends a slippery path to self-destruction. Co-starring Tom Skerrit as the Reverend Maclean and Emily Lloyd as wild-hearted Jessie Burns. A River Runs Through It is "destined to become a classic. It's a knockout" ( Bob Healy, Satellite News Network).

Trivia: 'William Hurt' wanted to play the role of Paul Maclean and once went fishing with Norman Maclean in Montana. When Hurt asked if he'd fished well enough to portray his brother, Maclean replied: "Well, Bill, you're a pretty good fisherman but not good enough to be my brother." (more)

Goofs: Continuity: In the final fishing scene, the water level on Paul changes a few times between shots. (more)

Older Norman: [narrating] Like many fly fishermen in western Montana where the summer days are almost Arctic in length, I often do not start fishing until the cool of the evening. Then in the Arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise...

Awards: Won Oscar. Another 3 wins & 6 nominations (more)
